More Reasons to Get Involved!

On the topic of extracurricular involvement, I have to give a shout out to HHS's online newspaper, Krabba Highlights. (I'm a word nerd). If you haven't read it yet, click the Krabba Highlights link to access this excellent publication. You don't have to be enrolled in Journalism to submit works to the school paper; it's a class and club! Swing by room 238 (with a hall pass, please) and get all the details from Ms. Gonzalez (English/Journalism teacher and club sponsor). Think of the soft skills you could build through your involvement with the school paper (at the very least: communication, teamwork, problem solving & critical thinking, and professionalism).

Get Involved!

Whatever your post-secondary plan, whether it be college, career/technical training, military enlistment, or workforce entrance, you (and your rèsumè) can benefit from getting involved in extracurricular activities. The U.S Department of Labor lists six "soft skills" that today's youths must master to be successful in the workforce. These "soft skills" include: communication, enthusiasm & attitude, teamwork, networking, problem solving & critical thinking, and professionalism. Taking part in extracurricular activities can help you to strengthen these skills. Check out the list of Clubs and Activities that Hampton High has to offer. Among the many organizations on the list you'll find information on HHS's chapters of national associations like DECA, FBLA and FCCLA. Active involvement in these organizations will not only foster your soft skills, but could also potentially result in scholarship funds (yes, these organizations offer scholarships!).

In addition to working on your soft skills, building your rèsumè, and making friends, you'll also be broadening your horizons and developing a dynamic personal profile. College admissions officers and employers are interested in prospective students/employees who demonstrate commitment to activities. Listing a bunch of clubs and organizations on your applications isn't as impressive as being able to list the numerous roles you have played and things you have accomplished through your involvement in one. Find one organization that interests you and become actively involved. If you can speak about your time as, say, editor of the school paper, or set designer for the drama club, rather than just showing up for meetings, you'll have a leg up on the competition. So go on; get out there; get involved!

Scholarships

Class of 2013:

Scholarship applications continue to pour into our office. Dr. Vaughan has been updating the scholarship list every Monday. Check the list out online here or come into Guidance. If you haven't visited the purple scholarship box yet, just ask Mrs. O when you come to Guidance, she'll point you in the right direction (down the hall and to the left!). Here's a time saving tip for the application process: read the scholarship listing before you grab the applications (there is one hanging above the box). Dr. Vaughan has outlined the eligibility criteria per scholarship in bullet format (by gender, ethnicity, GPA, etc.). Make sure you are eligible for the scholarship AND you can complete the application for submission by the deadline before selecting an application. Otherwise, you'll grab one copy of each, bring them home, read them all and find out you are only eligible for half of them. Then you'll trash the ones you aren't eligible for, plus a couple that you realize are due tomorrow, and you'll be feeling a bit frustrated and wondering why you ignored the aforementioned tip.

After all the hard work of applying for scholarships pays off and you receive letters of congratulations, let us know! We want to help celebrate your achievements. Bring your scholarship award letters into our office and we'll make a copy for our records. Then at graduation, when you're donning your cap and gown and about to burst with excitement and pride, your name will be called and following it will be the names of all the scholarships that you have been awarded. Imagine your mother's joy, your father's pride, your auntie's camera flash-flash-flashing, grandma's grin.....
